Day Tours from Aschaffenburg Rothenburg is a must on your list of places to see. Rothenburg ob der Tauber makes a great day tour by taking A3 Autobahn, East to Wurzburg and the A7 Autobahn, South to Rothenburg. Since this medieval walled city is such a big attraction, it may be best to visit during the week.
Wurzburg is a large city with many places to see. The Residenz (a Baroque palace) is the number one attraction. Here is a link to the homepage of Wurzburg.
Iphofen is a very special and often overlooked town. It is a medieval village located Southeast of Wurzburg. Take highway B8 through the countryside filled with vineyards.
Located about 30 minutes from Aschaffenburg is Miltenberg. This is a special town to visit because it is so well preserved and dates from the early 900's. The ride to this lovely town takes you through the countryside. Nearby in Grossheubach is a monastery where you can climb 600 steps to the top of the hill and find some real good dark beer. Definitely off the beaten path.
About an hour west of Aschaffenburg is Mainz. It is home to the world's first printing press and a museum which contains an original Gutenberg Bible. Also, Mainz is the starting point for a cruise to see the castles along the Rhine River, returning via train from Koblenz.
Heidelberg is little more than an hour away when you are out on the autobahn. This is a beautiful city lying along the Neckar River. Take a long day for this tour.
